About the Forster's Tern

The Forster's Tern is a graceful, slender seabird often seen hovering over marshes, bays, and coastal waters before plunging headfirst to catch fish. In breeding season, it sports a crisp black cap, pale gray back, and bright orange bill. Its buoyant flight and sharp, precise dives make it one of the most elegant hunters along the water's edge.

Fun Facts

  • Hover, Then Dive: Forster's Terns often face into the wind and hover briefly before making a quick, vertical plunge to catch small fish.
  • Marsh Nester: Unlike many coastal terns, they frequently nest in freshwater or brackish marshes, sometimes placing nests on floating vegetation.
  • Seasonal Style Change: In winter, their bold black cap fades to a partial mask, giving them a very different look from their breeding plumage.
  • Aerial Agility: They are highly maneuverable in flight, capable of quick turns and graceful glides while patrolling shorelines.
