Beltzville State Park

Pennsylvania Lake and Shoreline

A place that offers something new in every season.

About This Location

Beltzville State Park is centered around a large lake in eastern Pennsylvania and offers a diverse mix of habitats, including open water, grasslands, wooded areas, and shoreline. This variety makes it a productive birding destination throughout the year, with easy access via multiple parking areas and a network of trails. The park's open layout and changing seasonal conditions create opportunities for a wide range of species and photographic styles.

Photography Notes

This is a rewarding location for bird photography in every season. The lake regularly holds ducks and geese, with occasional sandpipers and gulls mixed in, while nearby trails lead through grasslands, woods, and lakefront areas that attract sparrows, swallows, flycatchers, and warblers. In spring, the Pine Run boat launch is a highlight, where nesting Purple Martins offer constant activity and excellent opportunities for interaction and in-flight images. I also appreciate the practical side of the park—clean restrooms are available at several parking areas. Just north of the park along Pohopoco Drive, small pull-off lots lead to walking trails that provide quiet, year-round birding. Species I enjoy photographing here include American Tree Sparrow, Cape May Warbler, American Goldfinch, Pied-billed Grebe, Canada Goose, Red-tailed Hawk, Brown Thrasher, and many other regularly nesting birds.
