El Potrero Photography Ranch

Texas Specialty Bird Photography

Where preparation, patience, and wild moments collide.

About This Location

El Potrero Photography Ranch is a private bird photography destination set in the brush country of South Texas, near Kingsville. The ranch offers controlled photo setups within native habitat, allowing photographers close, unobstructed views of species unique to the region. With blinds, natural perches, feeders, and water features, the setting is designed to highlight behavior, interaction, and clean backgrounds while still feeling rooted in the landscape.

Photography Notes

I visited El Potrero with my sister the day before attending the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, reserving a full day on the ranch with a professional bird photography guide. The morning began dramatically, with carrion placed below perch setups in front of a blind—quickly attracting multiple Crested Caracaras and vultures that provided near-perfect photographic opportunities. The highlight came when a Harris's Hawk arrived and remained for over thirty minutes, offering an unforgettable experience. We later moved to several other blinds set up near feeders, natural perches, and a small lake. The primary target was the stunning Green Jay, found only in the southern tip of Texas, and we were rewarded with repeated close views. Using a peanut butter mixture on man-made perches also drew in Golden-fronted Woodpeckers. From start to finish, this was truly an experience of a lifetime, and for anyone visiting the festival in early November, it's well worth adding to the trip.
