Fort De Soto Park

Florida's Premier Coastal Birding Destination

About This Location

Fort De Soto Park is one of Florida's premier coastal destinations, where a stunning mix of white-sand beaches, tidal flats, mangroves, and open water creates an incredibly rich and diverse habitat for birdlife. Located just south of St. Petersburg, the park spans five interconnected islands and offers miles of shoreline, quiet lagoons, and productive estuaries. Its varied ecosystems attract everything from shorebirds and wading birds to raptors and seabirds, making it a year-round hotspot for birders and photographers alike. With easy access, multiple parking areas, and well-maintained trails, Fort De Soto provides both scenic beauty and outstanding opportunities to observe birds in their natural environments.

Photography Notes

I visited Fort De Soto twice, and it did not take long to understand why, when I asked Florida birders for must-visit hotspots, this location came up again and again as their number one recommendation. I started each morning at the North Beach parking lot, walking the path through the grassy areas out to the beach, where I was immediately greeted by Royal Terns and a variety of sandpipers. The low grassy dunes proved ideal habitat for plovers and American Oystercatchers, always a highlight to see. From there, I made my way to the tip of North Beach and then worked back along the shallow tidal pools, where I found a mix of ducks, both White and Brown Pelicans, along with Dunlins and Sanderlings feeding along the edges. Exploring further along the main park road revealed even more variety, with multiple pull-offs and trails leading into marshes and wooded areas filled with songbirds, along with surprises like Nanday Parakeets and Osprey. This is truly a must-visit location for any birder spending time in the Tampa area—one of those places where every turn offers something new.
