Hunlock Creek & Warrior Trail

Pennsylvania Woodland Birding

A quiet stretch of river that rewards slow walking and careful watching.

About This Location

The Susquehanna Warrior Trail follows the west bank of the Susquehanna River through Luzerne County, offering miles of flat, scenic riverfront access. The trail passes through a mix of open river views, wooded edges, and brushy habitat that changes with the seasons. While the trail itself is long, even short sections provide excellent opportunities to observe birds moving along the river corridor.

Photography Notes

Although the trail runs for many miles, I usually bird a short stretch just off Route 11, north of Shickshinny, where a well-marked entrance leads to a parking lot and boat launch. I often start by walking along the river's edge, checking for ducks and frequently spotting a Belted Kingfisher. From there, I walk short distances north and south on the trail, watching for activity and working areas where birds move through open branches. Spring is my favorite time here, when warblers are active, including Common Yellowthroat, Cerulean Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and others. Once I see movement, I focus on positioning myself with the light behind me and clean sightlines through the branches to create simple, uncluttered images.
