Leaser Lake

Pennsylvania Lake Birding

A familiar place that never feels the same twice.

About This Location

Leaser Lake is a sprawling park in Lehigh County built around a large, irregularly shaped lake bordered by woods, grasslands, and sheltered coves. Its varied shoreline and surrounding habitat support a wide range of bird life throughout the year, from songbirds and raptors to migrating waterfowl. With open water, quiet inlets, and a continuous trail system, the lake offers constant opportunities for discovery in a natural, relaxed setting.

Photography Notes

This is my favorite bird photography location and just about an hour from home. The lake's changing conditions mean you never quite know what you'll encounter—ducks, cormorants, teals, geese, and other species move between open water and the many coves. A roughly four-mile trail circles the entire lake, passing through woods, grasslands, and along the shoreline. I usually visit each of the three boat launches and walk the trail in both directions from the parking areas, which consistently provides the best variety of birds. During migration, warblers are active, and sandpipers can sometimes be found along the edges. Several Purple Martin houses offer opportunities to photograph interactions and nestling feedings, and over the years I've also photographed Ospreys, Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, and even Peregrine Falcons here.
