Ohio - Biggest Week in American Birding

North America's Premier Spring Migration Festival

About This Location

Held each spring along the southern shore of Lake Erie, The Biggest Week in American Birding is one of North America's premier birding events. Timed perfectly with peak migration, the festival centers on world-class hotspots such as Magee Marsh, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, Howard Marsh, and Metzger Marsh—areas famous for close views of warblers, shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds. Festival headquarters are located at the Maumee Bay Convention Center, which also offers excellent birding right outside, including a productive boardwalk through marsh habitat.

Photography Notes

I attended the festival for the first time this year and enjoyed it so much that I plan to return. For anyone visiting this region, especially for the first time, signing up for the festival and guided van trips is a smart move. Knowledgeable guides take you directly to active birds and help you spot species you might otherwise miss, while the interaction with other birders adds to the fun. I also spent time birding on my own, which led to some of my favorite photographs. Walking the Magee Marsh boardwalk solo—something I did four times during my visit—allowed me to slow down and really observe individual birds, especially warblers. The surrounding marshes are well marked and easy to explore, offering excellent views of ducks, egrets, gulls, and sandpipers. Throughout the week, the atmosphere was welcoming and generous, with birders quick to share sightings and locations. Between the incredible birding, expert guides, friendly community, and excellent vendors at the convention center, it is easy to see why this event truly earns its name.
