Photography Notes

Peace Valley Park is one of my favorite birding locations in southeastern Pennsylvania, offering a rewarding mix of open water, woodland trails, and seasonal variety. I almost always begin at sunrise at the Sailor's Point parking lot. From there, taking the trail to the right and crossing the dam provides sweeping views of both sides of the lake—an ideal setup for catching the best early light on ducks and gulls, especially during the winter months. Keep an eye out for terns, Ospreys, and Bald Eagles as well. On the return, I take the trail straight ahead, which runs along the base of the dam through a beautiful wooded corridor. This section is excellent for songbirds and regularly produces woodpeckers, warblers, flycatchers, and finches. The park's additional trails are always worth exploring too, particularly in spring when migration is in full swing. I usually wrap up by driving to the visitor center. From the parking lot, a short walk to the bridge over the lake can reveal sandpipers, swallows, and Belted Kingfishers. Behind the visitor center, the bird blind is a favorite spot of mine—perfect for practicing birds-in-flight photography as birds move between feeders and nearby branches. In summer, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are frequent visitors, adding even more excitement to an already productive location.
