Erie Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania's coastal gem where every season reveals something new.
Presque Isle State Park is Pennsylvania's premier birding destination, a long sandy peninsula that extends into Lake Erie and hosts more bird species than any other location in the state. The park's diversity of habitats—beaches, dunes, grasslands, marshes, lagoons, pine forest, and wooded areas—creates exceptional year-round birding opportunities. With numerous parking areas and trails spread throughout the peninsula, Presque Isle invites exploration in every season, each visit offering something new.
I've only visited Presque Isle a few times so far, but even with limited experience, it's clear this is a place with endless potential. I've visited during the winter months, missing the famous May warbler migration that draws birders from across the region, but winter revealed its own rewards. On a cold, windy November day, I made my way out to Gull Point, where the exposed jetties were alive with ducks and gulls riding the stiff Lake Erie winds. At the far end of the point, I photographed Snow Buntings, Sanderlings, and waterfowl including Redheads and Scaup—hardy birds perfectly adapted to the harsh conditions. Along the drive through the park, frequent pull-offs provide views of grasslands, marshes, beaches, and forested sections, each offering different photographic possibilities. Presque Isle is the kind of place that feels magical no matter the season, and I know I've only begun to scratch the surface of what it has to offer.
