Lycoming County Pennsylvania
A quiet gem where patience reveals the unexpected.
Rose Valley Lake State Park is a quiet, lesser-known gem in north-central Pennsylvania that offers excellent birding in a peaceful, uncrowded setting. The park features a scenic lake surrounded by wetlands, open edges, and wooded hillsides, creating a rich mix of habitats that attract raptors, waterfowl, marsh birds, and songbirds. Its low traffic and simple layout make it an especially rewarding place for patient observation and photography.
I always begin my visits at the south boat launch parking area, right along the lake. This spot regularly produces raptors such as Bald Eagles and hawks, along with swallows and a variety of songbirds moving through the shoreline trees. After leaving this area, I return to the main road and turn left to a small pull-off that overlooks the lake. Directly across the road is a marshy area that often provides excellent photographic opportunities, including ducks, Belted Kingfishers, Red-winged Blackbirds, and other wetland species. From there, I continue to the first left onto Lake Road, where several parking areas offer access to both trails and the lake edge. I often park and walk sections of this road, which has yielded a surprising variety of birds over the years—including a memorable encounter with an overwintering Northern Shrike. Rose Valley Lake rewards slow exploration, and some of my favorite images here have come from simply walking, watching, and waiting.
