Snyder County Pennsylvania
A short walk where something unexpected waits around every bend.
Trail of Trees is a small, quiet natural area tucked away in Snyder County and known mostly to local birders. Though modest in size, it offers an impressive diversity of habitats in a short distance—open grasslands transitioning into mature woods, followed by denser forest and a gently winding stream. This mix creates ideal conditions for both edge species and forest birds, making it a consistently rewarding stop, especially in spring migration.
I visit Trail of Trees several times each spring, drawn by its reliability and sense of discovery. The experience begins at a small parking area surrounded by grasslands, where I have photographed Eastern Meadowlarks perched and singing in the open fields. From there, a narrow trail leads through a beautiful wooded section before bending right into thicker forest, eventually following a small, meandering stream. This stretch is where the magic happens. Each spring, I can count on encountering an elusive Yellow-breasted Chat, along with a wide variety of songbirds, warblers, woodpeckers, and flycatchers moving through the trees. It is a short walk, but one filled with constant activity—and the feeling that something unexpected might appear around every bend.
