About the Osprey

The Osprey is a large raptor often seen soaring over lakes, rivers, and coastal waters in search of fish. With its long, angled wings and dark eye stripe, it is built for hunting over open water. When it spots a fish, it hovers briefly before plunging feet-first into the water in a spectacular dive.

Fun Facts

  • Fish Specialist: Ospreys feed almost entirely on fish — making them one of the few raptors with such a specialized diet.
  • Reversible Toes: They can rotate one outer toe backward, helping them grip slippery fish more securely.
  • Waterproof Adaptations: Their dense, oily feathers and closable nostrils help them handle dramatic dives into water.
  • Platform Nesters: Ospreys build large stick nests, often on tall platforms, utility poles, or dead trees near water.
