About the Palm Warbler

The Palm Warbler is a small, brownish warbler often seen walking on the ground or low in shrubs during migration. It has a yellow undertail and a habit of constantly wagging its tail. Though not as brightly colored as some warblers, its behavior and steady movement make it easy to recognize once you know what to look for.

Fun Facts

  • Constant Tail Wag: Palm Warblers frequently pump their tails up and down — one of their most reliable field marks.
  • Ground Forager: Unlike many warblers that stay high in trees, Palm Warblers often feed on or near the ground.
  • Yellow Undertail: Even in dull winter plumage, they show a bright yellow patch under the tail.
  • Long Migrant: They breed in northern bogs and migrate south to the southeastern U.S. and the Caribbean for winter.
