About the Red-bellied Woodpecker

The Red-bellied Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker commonly found in woodlands, parks, and backyard feeders. Despite its name, the faint reddish wash on its belly is often hard to see — the bright red cap and nape are far more noticeable. With its black-and-white barred back and strong, chisel-like bill, it moves confidently along tree trunks and branches.

Fun Facts

  • Name Confusion: The red belly is subtle; the bold red on the head is much easier to spot.
  • Backyard Visitor: Red-bellied Woodpeckers frequently visit feeders for suet, nuts, and seeds.
  • Strong Drummer: They drum on trees and sometimes even metal surfaces to communicate.
  • Cavity Nester: They excavate nest cavities in trees, which may later be used by other wildlife.
