About the Sanderling

The Sanderling is a small, pale shorebird best known for racing back and forth along sandy beaches in sync with the waves. In winter, it appears mostly light gray and white, blending beautifully with the shoreline. Quick and energetic, it darts toward retreating waves to snatch tiny crustaceans before the next surge rolls in.

Fun Facts

  • Wave Chaser: Sanderlings time their movements with the surf, running in to feed as waves recede and retreating just before the next one arrives.
  • Long-Distance Traveler: They breed in the high Arctic and migrate thousands of miles to winter on beaches around the world.
  • No Back Toe: Unlike many shorebirds, Sanderlings lack a hind toe, helping them move quickly across firm sand.
  • Seasonal Style Change: In breeding season, they develop rusty tones on their head and back, very different from their pale winter look.
