Autumn Hide-and-Seek

Swamp Sparrow • Leaser Lake • Fall

← Back to Bird Stories
One early morning at Leaser Lake, I noticed a sparrow flitting in and out of the dried cattails along the shoreline, never staying visible for long. I slowly worked my way into position with the soft morning sun at my back and watched as it disappeared from sight, only to pop up moments later on a different cattail, repeating the pattern again and again. In October, this behavior makes perfect sense — the cattails offer shelter from predators, protection from cool breezes, and a reliable source of seeds and lingering insects as fall settles in. The combination of golden light, textured cattails, and the bird's restless movement turned a simple moment into a playful game of hide-and-seek, one that was as enjoyable to watch as it was to photograph.
