← Back to Bird Stories
While walking my usual trail through the Susquehanna Riverlands, I noticed several Cedar Waxwings moving through the trees. As one of my favorite birds, I stopped to observe and photograph them, expecting the usual elegant perching and soft calls. Two of the waxwings soon settled on the same branch and began interacting in a way I had never witnessed firsthand, though I had often heard about it—a gentle exchange of a berry between their bills. Watching this intimate behavior felt deeply moving, as I could not help but imagine the meaning behind the gesture and the bond these birds may share. One of the great joys of birding is being present for these rarely seen rituals, quiet moments that reveal the tenderness and complexity of the natural world.
