Photographing owls is always a treat. When I saw a post on social media about Great Horned Owl fledglings at one of my favorite birding locations, Montour Preserve, I immediately reached out to the birder who had shared the sighting. Generously, he offered to meet me there the very next day and personally show me the owls. It did not take long for us to locate the two fledglings perched among the trees, with a nearby adult keeping watch. Over the course of the following week, I returned several times, photographing the young owls in different light and positions as they explored their surroundings. The resulting images became some of my favorites of the year — a rewarding blend of patience, community, and the quiet magic that always seems to surround owls.
