A Moment on the Roofline

Tree Swallow • Leaser Lake, Pennsylvania • Spring

While walking one of my favorite trails at Leaser Lake in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, I passed a familiar stretch lined with wooden nest boxes—homes each spring to House Wrens, House Sparrows, Eastern Bluebirds, and Tree Swallows. I always slow down here, knowing the activity around these boxes often tells the best stories. On this day, I was rewarded with a front-row seat to an impressive moment of Tree Swallow courtship. The female perched confidently on the roof of the box, glancing upward as the male swept past her again and again, diving low but never landing. Then, in a brief and perfectly timed moment, he ascended onto her back, wings and tail fluttering as she held her stance. It was a fleeting but powerful display—one of those intimate behaviors most people never notice. Bird photography is always rewarding, but witnessing and documenting birds interacting naturally—whether courting, feeding, or caring for their young—adds a deeper meaning to every image and makes moments like this truly special.
