Along the Bobcat Trail at the Orlando Wetlands, I came upon one of the most fascinating scenes of the trip. A Pied-billed Grebe wrestled with a frog for its morning meal. The grebe repeatedly shook the frog violently and dunked it beneath the surface, likely trying to subdue it before swallowing. For several minutes, the struggle played out right in front of me, the frog still kicking as the grebe worked methodically, surfacing and diving in quick succession. I stayed locked on the action, capturing each stage of the encounter, until the frog suddenly slipped from its grasp and disappeared back into the water. Whether it escaped or was simply lost, I will never know. The entire sequence was a raw, intimate look at survival in the wetlands, and one of the most memorable moments of my time there.
