A Quiet Moment on a Country Road

Killdeer • Montour County • Spring

While driving along a quiet country road in Montour County, I slowly scanned the farm fields for signs of wildlife. Near a narrow stream, a pair of Killdeer caught my eye as they wandered along the muddy edge. I pulled over, shut off the engine, and carefully lowered the window, beginning to photograph from a respectful distance. What unfolded next was completely unexpected. The male gradually approached the female and, with deliberate calm, mounted her—an intimate and rarely witnessed moment in the birds breeding cycle. In that instant, I realized I was documenting one of nature most private rituals, unfolding quietly and without drama. To witness it was thrilling; to capture it in photographs felt like a true gift. Moments like this are a powerful reminder of why slowing down and paying attention can lead to extraordinary discoveries.
