At sunrise at Francis Slocum State Park, I was focused on sparrows darting in and out of the brush when a Blue Jay suddenly crossed my field of view and landed in a nearby tree. I raised the camera and began shooting without any real expectation, only later realizing what I was witnessing. Frame by frame, the jay was carefully gripping a nut, methodically chipping it open, then pausing to consume each piece with remarkable precision. It was calm, deliberate behavior—unhurried and almost meditative. While I have seen many birds handle food this way, I had never captured such a clean, complete sequence of the process. Discovering the story afterward, as the images unfolded on the screen, made the moment even more rewarding—one of those quiet surprises that only reveals itself when you slow down and pay attention.
