An Unexpected Encounter Along the Canal Trail

While walking the canal trail at Wildwood Lake Park, I was enjoying a relaxed morning photographing ducks, egrets, herons, and songbirds on both sides of the path when I crossed paths with another birder carrying a camera. As I often do, I asked, "See anything interesting?" Her response was immediate and enthusiastic: "Have you seen the Green Heron nest?" I had not—so she kindly led me back up the trail and pointed it out. Tucked into a tree bending over the marsh, and surprisingly close to the trail, was an active Green Heron nest with attentive adults and lively chicks. The scene was both wonderful and entertaining, as the chicks seemed endlessly alert—stretching, jostling, and clearly anticipating their next meal. Moments like this are a reminder that birding is as much about community as it is about patience and observation; sharing discoveries with others often leads to the most memorable encounters in the field.
