Winter Seeds and Quiet Resolve

Tufted Titmouse • Plymouth Flats, Pennsylvania • December

← Back to Bird Stories
On a bitterly cold December morning at Plymouth Flats in Luzerne County, I arrived to find the ponds and marshes locked in ice, the landscape hushed and seemingly empty. Expecting a slow day, I wandered to an adjacent area near the farm and noticed subtle movement in a stand of tall, dead grasses. I parked and waited, watching as chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and a pair of Carolina Wrens flitted in and out of cover. One Tufted Titmouse, in particular, held my attention—working diligently at the dried seed heads just feet from me as I remained partially hidden behind the car. I stood quietly, captivated by its persistence and energy, a small reminder that even on the coldest mornings, life finds a way to carry on.
