Winter Standoff at the Treetop

Red-tailed Hawk & American Crows • Francis Slocum State Park, Pennsylvania • January

← Back to Bird Stories
On a beautiful January morning at Francis Slocum State Park, I was already feeling satisfied with a productive birding session and had begun heading back to the car when I ran into several fellow photographers along the trail. As we exchanged notes on the mornings sightings—including a recently seen Red-tailed Hawk—the timing could not have been better. The hawk suddenly appeared, landing high atop a pine, and almost immediately two American Crows launched into relentless aerial attacks. For nearly ten minutes, the crows mobbed the much larger raptor, diving and calling in a clear attempt to drive it from the area, while the hawk remained calm and unmoved, conserving energy and holding its perch. From a respectful distance, we photographed the encounter, captivated by this winter drama—a vivid reminder that even on the quietest days, nature can deliver moments of tension, strategy, and raw behavior just when you least expect them.
