About the Tree Swallow

The Tree Swallow is a graceful, fast-flying songbird often seen sweeping low over lakes, fields, and wetlands. With glossy blue-green upperparts and a bright white underside, it flashes beautifully in sunlight. Agile and acrobatic, it catches flying insects midair and frequently nests in cavities or nest boxes near water.

Fun Facts

  • Aerial Acrobat: Tree Swallows feed almost entirely on flying insects, catching them in swift, looping flight.
  • Shimmering Feathers: Their blue-green color is iridescent and can appear brighter or darker depending on the light.
  • Cavity Nester: They readily use nest boxes, especially those placed near ponds or open fields.
  • Social Birds: Outside of breeding season, they may gather in large flocks before migrating south.
